Lakeside Wedding in Malibu – Robin & Jen
Robin and Jen met at a BBQ on Lamma Island, Hong Kong in 2013. Robin had just moved to Hong Kong and Jen was living in Beijing. Robin sat down next to her and started eating a corn on the cob out of his jacket pocket. Jen was very perplexed as to why this guy had brought his own corn to the bbq and they started to chat. They soon discovered that they had other mutual friends and would meet a number of times over the next few years. Four years later, Jen got a job in Hong Kong and Robin swept in and asked her out.
Robin proposed to Jen after she finished a triathlon in the French Alps. He placed the ring in a box with a tart, and gave it to her as a celebratory treat. For the rest of the day and night, she refused to eat it because she had too many sugary drinks during the race and needed to eat something salty. Finally the next morning she became hungry, opened the box, and Robin proposed.
This happy couple both love the outdoors and wanted to keep eveything as natural as possible. Originally they had wanted to get married at some National park but as they we’re living in Hong Kong and flying back to Los Angeles for the wedding, that plan wouldn’t make sense with timing. They looked at a lot of venues (or rather Jen’s mom did) but didn’t really love anything until they found The Lodge at Malibou Lake last minute in November and felt that it was a perfect match.
Neither of them love too much colour or bright colours so they wanted to keep the colour pallette neutral. The pampas grass kept the natural feeling as well so they wanted to incorporate that into the flowers. They wanted a natural flower decor with neutral colours, incorporating pampas grass and a mix of tall and short arrangements. Their florist said she hadn’t done anything like the photos they’d sent her but she really did an amazing job!
When it came to their attire choices, simple and comfortable was their motto!
On the morning of the wedding, Robin says that he was a bit nervous, cold, stuck in traffic and a bit late. “I had anxiety about my tie because I still didn’t know how to tie a tie. I didn’t know how to deal with the pocket square. I had never worn cuff links. This was one of the few times I had ever worn a suit. I felt uncomfortable and then finally when I saw my beautiful bride, Jen, I knew everything was going to be okay.”
Jen was crossing her fingers for the rain to stop but also nervous about her vows. “However, the time passed by so quickly, I hardly had time to think about anything. I think I just wanted everything to start and be able to see everyone we loved in one room. I was ready to see Robin.”
Robin loves photography and works in video so he said that it was important to get real professional photos and videos so they had separate photographers and videographers and they say that it was worth it!
On their wedding day, Jen’s favourite moment was when their flower girl, Sienna, refused to walk down the aisle. She says she “loved how her dad improvised and threw the flowers for her. Having everyone laugh brings a smile to my face. I also loved hearing Robin’s vows- his vows was so beautiful and touching. I was in awe of his writing skills, although not surprised! It was nice to reminisce about the beginning of our story and the adventures we have been through.”
Robin’s favourite moment was standing at the end of the aisle and hearing Blackbird by the Beatles (instrumental) start playing and then he saw Jen walking down the aisle. “It was like my 2 favorite things happening all at once in front of all my beloved family and friends. It’s as if my whole life was “waiting for this moment”- just like in the song, and then the most important moment in my life occurred.”
Jen thought that hearing all the speeches and realising how much effort and thought my dad and our siblings put into each speech was so heart-warming. “I don’t think people often express how they feel to one another but on that day, we were able to share our feelings so candidly and loving with one another. It is so beautiful to see everyone come together with so much joy.”
Robin says that their big day felt like a fairytale because all of the people from different times in his life, came together for the first time, and celebrated this significant moment in their life. There is something special in the joining of two families and two lives.
