Romantic Plantation Wedding – Megan & Luke

“Luke and I met in the library at Clemson. He was studying, I was not, and we were definitely the loudest table in the library. We spent the whole night cracking jokes and hanging out with our friends in the library. Before we knew it, the night had gone by and it was time for class. From that day, I knew that Luke was my forever. We dated for 5 years before Luke finally asked my dad if we could get married. He planned an elaborate proposal with a photographer and fancy dinner and all of the things a girl can dream of…. WELLLLLLL Hurricane Matthew was heading towards Charleston and Luke did not check the weather. We evacuated to the Upstate where my parents live and waited out the storm. One night during the trip, Luke and I went to an Irish pub with my brothers and enjoyed a couple of beers and a lot of darts. That night Luke spilled the beans. He asked me to marry him, showed me the ring, and we both just laughed and cried and laughed and cried! The next morning, Luke took the ring back… yes, i’m not kidding. He told me he could not propose that way and insisted on getting a “do-over.” I have always been a no take-backsies kind of girl so obviously, this was not the plan I wanted!! haha! After a few weeks, Luke finally popped the question again with the help of our fur baby, Tilly, and the rest is history. After 6 1/2 years, we finally are married and he is the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I know that I have to be a good decision for him if he asked me twice :)”

“My wedding was an absolute southern fairytale! My husband and I had a lot of family traveling from out of town to celebrate with us so our main thought about picking a venue was that we wanted it to SCREAM Charleston. Old Wide Awake Plantation NAILED THAT! The huge white plantation house, the pond with the fountain, the trees with Spanish moss, the ivy on the bricks, the wrap around porch, the long driveway to use as an aisle, and all of the greenery! Literally everything about it was perfect. We made sure to let the greenery of the nature around the house set the tone for the wedding and we added in some neutral shades of gold, silver, natural woods, and blush pink flowers of course. Our officiant, Charles Waugh, spent HOURS the weeks before hanging out with us to really get a feel for who we were as a couple and we have heard nothing but amazing reviews about how well he nailed our ceremony! We were so blessed to become his friend. He included prayers to keep the ceremony god centered, while also including inside jokes, quotes that came from our favorite books, and picking things that matched us perfectly. For instance, the reading he chose was “Everything I know now, I learned in Kindergarten.” I am a teacher and that is a HUGE part of my personality and it was the simplest, sweetest touch, that made such an impact. Our day was PERFECTION.”

“Eventhaus Rentals brought nearly EVERYTHING we needed to complete our day. The tables, the linens, the amazing chairs, the platters, the build a bar, the place settings for the head table, the farm table for the head table and the dessert, etc. etc. etc. This company far exceeded our expectations! When we told Erica from Eventhaus that we wanted southern and beautiful, she really went for it and nailed it! Not to mention, we threw in some last minute changes (like adding a cigar roller) and they rolled with the punches flawlessly! They were able to accommodate every single thing that we needed and more. We were so amazed by how beautiful the entire venue looked for our day. We couldn’t have completed the look without Erica! As a teacher, I love to craft, so I really started planning this wedding thinking I’d do a ton of DIY projects to make it special! Boy was I wrong. The amount of work that vendors do to make your day special is just amazing. I spent a lot of time on Etsy buying personalized things like the ring bearer box, the flower girl basket, the card box, the welcome sign, the signs for tables, etc. Etsy was an amazing resource when it came to the last minute details. As far as DIY goes, I did a lot of behind the scenes organizing thanks to good ole google drive, brought assorted bottles and vases for the centerpieces, and put pictures in frames to fill in where needed. At Home was an amazing store to get picture frames for cheap, staples printed our welcome sign large and quickly, and the bottles were bought off of a Facebook exchange site for brides. A year and a half of planning really made all of these little details possible because I was able to shop around through other beautiful weddings before my own!”

“The flowers played a HUGE role in our wedding and the look of the entire venue. Old Wide Awake is already a beautiful venue but the best part of it is the greenery that surrounds the entire plantation. We wanted to make sure to reflect this in our centerpieces, on our tables, in the cakes, in bouquets, boutonnieres, etc. Karen from OK Florist was absolutely amazing to work with! I took her all of the bottles for centerpieces the week before and she delivered my vision perfectly. My bouquet was huge with different shades of pink and white flowers and tons of dusty sage and eucalyptus to give it the natural look. The bridesmaids bouquets were much smaller but in the same color palette and then blended perfectly. The boutonnieres were also made to match and it all was just amazing. Across our head table was a large garland with white roses, there were hydrangeas everywhere, and she provided flowers for the dessert table which really set it apart. These flowers were affordable and breathtaking! I only wish that the bouquets would have lasted forever because I will never view a bouquet from anywhere else the same!”

“Our entire wedding felt like it was catered and created just for us. Margaret McKenzie, who was our wedding planner, works directly with Old Wide Awake Plantation and if there is anyone who could have made our day go flawlessly it was her! I called her (way too) often, emailed her (also too often) questions I had, and she always was ready with an answer or ready to go on the hunt for one! With my mom being across the state, Margaret really made me comfortable and helped me make the decisions that were best for us. She never pressured any decision and was always a listening ear! If I could bottle her up and keep her forever, I would! She was amazing. Its hard to pick one favourite thing so here are a few things I adored about our wedding.
1. Our officiant’s ceremony was tailor-made and told our story flawlessly. Charles Waugh’s personality makes becoming his friend and trusting him effortless. He blew us away with his words and how well he delivered his ceremony.
2. Margaret McKenzie, my wedding planner, for obvious reasons. She was my right wing woman and I love how organized and in charge, she was to make our day PERFECT!
3. Rebecca Hicks, our photographer, and Shelby Ring with Nest Productions, our videographer, spent so much time to get the PERFECT shots and clips to use to really tell our story all over again. Looking through pictures and watching the videos is like reliving that amazing day every time. Their talent is unparalleled.
4. Erica, with Eventhaus rentals, worked so hard to make sure everything was delivered, set up, taken down, and perfect for our day! Everything we rented, we wished we could keep forever (especially their farm tables… TO DIE FOR!)
5. Juan Guillermo, Bunn DJ Company DJ, NAILED the vibe of the party. He knew exactly what to play to keep everyone dancing! At one point, my dad was doing the worm, the whole family was on their backs for shout!, and he even let us scream the occasional Taylor Swift. Saying he delivered a bomb party is an UNDERSTATEMENT!
6. Cloud IX Bridal, Maggie & Lash, were the best glam squad we could have hoped for. They did: 7 bridesmaids makeup, 5 hair, 1 mother of the bride hair and makeup, and also all of my bridal! We felt BEAUTIFUL! Not to mention, if you ever need a friend you definitely go to your hair lady right? Well Maggie is my normal hair girl and she is just the cutest and sweetest human being! I am so lucky to have had a glam squad that was so fabulous! There are so many things that made our wedding the best day of our lives, and we are so thankful!”

“My wedding dress was easy to pick. I knew from about a million episodes of say yes to the dress that I wanted big and layered and BOY DID I GET THAT! The bridesmaids used Azazie to get their dresses which was one of the best choices we made during the planning process. Not only were their dresses affordable, but I picked a color and fabric and every girl was able to choose a dress that would FIT THEIR BODY how they wanted. I mean, who wants to spend all of the money for a bridesmaid dress and feel like you don’t look pretty!? They all looked stunning and the groomsmen definitely noticed! ;)The groomsmen suits were a total husband decision. He wanted grey but not too light and not too dark and Jos. A Banks had suits that were perfect and priced so well! The colour was a great choice for the boys to invest in a tailored suit that they can wear for multiple occasions in the future!”

“My favourite moment, outside of marrying a stud, on my wedding day was the minute my dad saw me in my wedding dress and turned into a puddle. He doesn’t cry often (maybe 3 times my whole life) and he did not hold back that day. Watching my dad and his dad and our families become one was just mesmerizing. Everyone got along perfectly, everyone loved on us so much, and we left with the fullest hearts! It was flawless.”
