The Mill at Fine Creek Wedding – Kayla & Gabe

Kayla and Gabe met when they were in 7th grade and had that middle school crush. When they were at the end of their freshman year in high school they starting dating, and have been together ever since!

They love the outer banks in North Carolina and had never been to Ocracoke Island. They went with some of their friends, and it was a beautiful day. Kayla loves to search for shells, so she went off looking up and down the beach, and Gabe came to catch up with her. They walked together for a while, and she went to the ocean to rinse off some shells when Gabe called her over like he had found something really cool and got down on one knee and popped the question.

Nestled in the ruins of The Mill at Fine Creek Kayla and Gabe’s jewel toned whimsical wedding took place surrounded by family and friends! They wanted amethyst and geodes to be involved in the wedding. They picked purple and gray as their go to colour scheme. They wanted to go for a classically romantic style. Kayla and Gabe loved the creek on the site as well as the older look of the mill ruins. They picked fall to have all the colours of the leaves and the nice cool air.

Gabe went for a custom made suit. And Kayla went with a strapless ivory lace wedding gown. Gabe also got custom made wedding shoes with their names and wedding date on the bottom, and Kayla got some gorgeous bejeweled Badgley Mischka heels. Her jewelry was from Kendra Scott.

The photography was important to them to help us relive the memories. “David did a wonderful job capturing all the details and the feeling of every moment. I would say splurge on the photography and skip the videographer(we decided not to do one). Also the food! We did an Italian fair buffet. We started before the ceremony with sangria, and had an artisan cheese station, garlic shrimp, spinach flatbreads, meatballs for cocktail hour. We started the reception with a ministoni soup, then moved to the main course. The buffet included chicken Parmesan (Gabe’s favorite) and baked manicotti (my favorite) as well as a carving beef tenderloin station, crab cakes, Caesar salad, grilled asparagus. We had fried mozzarella, cannolis, and tiramisu later in the evening too.”

“Our first look was really special to us. I was really not expecting Gabe to become emotional and he did. It was one of the most memorable parts of the day. I also really loved our portraits by the creek. We were still so excited to be newly weds and the creek was so pretty on that perfect day. We had a ton of fun dancing with our friends and family. Gabe really enjoyed hanging out with all of the guys before hand. I really loved when I got to finally put on my dress and get the final touches added. I was happy to have my mom help me into my dress, jewelry, and shoes. I also really appreciated the moment right before I walked down the aisle when my dad was helping calm my nerves. It was very special during our ceremony because Gabe’s cousin married us. It was nice to have someone who knew us and continues to be a part of our life bring us together as a married couple.”

“We were absolutely in love with our wedding flowers. They were the perfect amount of color. The centerpieces in the geometric terrariums were just as I had envisioned. We wanted something shorter so that people could talk among themselves. We also utilized the flowers from outside to bring inside next to the sweatheart table along with the floral arrangement on our table. The flowers were the perfect touch to brighten up the room and give that romantic feel. Mary did an amazing job bringing my wedding flowers’ dream to life.”

“We did an ombré rosette 3 tier wedding cake with the top and bottom layers being carrot cake and the middle being red velvet. My husband and I love cake and sweets and our cake was the perfect combo of our tastes. We had a clear acrylic geometric topper that simply stayed Mr and Mrs purchased from Etsy seller: LoveStruckLettering. When we were cutting our cake it almost fell over, it was a funny moment (but thank goodness it didn’t). We also, being the playful people we are, had to smush the cake in each others faces just a little bit.”

“We are obsessed with candles, so it was only fitting that we gave them as favors. We chose varying scents (Candied Pecan, Pineapple Cilantro, Vineyard, Lemon Lavender, and Honey Gelato)of Yankee Candle votives. Guests were also given their agate slate placecards.”

When asked if any aspect of their day was DIY, Kayla said, “Calligraphy on agate place cards (agate skates purchased from Etsy seller: TheHollowGeode ) Signage (let love glow, please turn off, guest book, and share the love hashtag signs) Guest book (mini envelopes purchased from Etsy seller: GreetingWithLove) Seating Assignments My grandmother made my veil with the hem lace from my dress.”

And when asked if they included any family heirlooms or special traditions, she said: “A pin that has been passed down on my maternal family side was placed on my bouquet. My great grandmother wore it all the time and for my college graduation my grandmothers sister gifted it to me. It was important to have the gold piece with me so it was like my great grandma was there. I also got married with a penny in my shoe. Italian tradition was that a penny with the year you were to be married on it was put in the fabric of a family’s wedding dress. My mom’s cousin made this for my day. Gabe wore his late grandfather’s gold cufflinks. I also followed the “something old, new, borrowed, blue). My supervisor threw me a bridal shower and gifted me an old pin that was gold and blue that was passed down in her family. I wore it at the bottom of my dress. I also wore a sapphire ring pinned over my heart inside my dress of a ring that Gabe gave me the first year we were together. I borrowed small diamond earrings that my grandmother let me borrow that my grandfather had bought her many years ago. I also wore my matron of honor’s old garter that I caught on her wedding day.”
